Αρκετά αργότερα ο Will Smith ζήτησε συγνώμη για την πράξη του λέγοντας: 

«Θέλω να ζητήσω συγγνώμη από την Ακαδημία Κινηματογράφου. Θέλω να ζητήσω συγγνώμη από τους συνυποψηφίους μου. Είναι μία πανέμορφη στιγμή και δεν κλαίω επειδή κέρδισα ένα βραβείο. Το ότι βραβεύθηκα, δεν έχει να κάνει με εμένα. Έχει να κάνει με το να δίνεις φως σε όλους τους ανθρώπους», τόνισε στον λόγο που εκφώνησε, όταν πήρε το δικό του Oscar Α’ Ανδρικού Ρόλου.
